By the laws of nature, Hulk is king over all he sees but chooses to run through it freely, with no need to introduce any kind of order. It's only the introduction of the prostitute (who in the modern story is Betty) that he is forced to abandon his free life and submit to the petty ordering of society.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-90323745147382234142013-04-27T22:56:23.425-04:002013-04-27T22:56:23.425-04:00now that i think about it, might as well give a sm...now that i think about it, might as well give a small rundown of both comics for anyone who might be interested.

the boys takes place in a "normal" modern superhero setting, where the supes exist, but are artificially created, and are not only used as a cash cow for the people who make them, but are also mostly completely insane and amoral. the eponymous boys are the small group of people who keep them in line, often with extreme amounts of violence. the series itself follows the newest addition to the group, recruited shortly after an incident where his girlfriend is killed during a fight between a supervillain and a member of the top superhero team, as he learns his way around the real nature of the whole superhumans business, as well as the personal stories of his fellow team members and their old enmity with the same top hero team that offed his girlfriend. lots of violence, sex and scheming ensue.

berserk on the other hand is a dark fantasy manga (HUGE emphasis on "dark"), following a swordsman called "guts", who was taken in as a baby by a mercenary band after being found under the hung corpse of his mother. raised as a mercenary himself, and having had to train with adult-sized swords as a kid, guts grows up as a fucking huge warrior with an even huger sword (which he wields one-handed a fair amount of the time) and a bad temperament that dwarfs both by a few orders of magnitude. after killing a particularly nasty opponent during a castle siege, he gets scouted by another mercenary band, led by a would-be ubermensch called griffith, and ends up joining them and campaigning with them for a time, until a certain chain of events leads to the involvement of demonic forces and starts guts' vengeful quest to find griffith and kill him. lots and lots and LOTS of violence ensues in the most badass ways imaginable.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04227180442337023676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-36804662953209921642013-04-27T15:56:03.408-04:002013-04-27T15:56:03.408-04:00The Grant Morrison Batman run Batman is the best B...The Grant Morrison Batman run Batman is the best Batman run in my opinion, and makes Batman the biggest badass he has ever been. Without at least one of the two, he got boring fast. Every time a new line of Punisher comics would come out, they'd be great for about a year and then the wheels would fall off when the artist, writer or both would move on to other titles. I can't rememebr who the artist was on the original mini-series but he was good anyway. The first ongoing series started out with Klaus Jansondoing the artwork and it was simplistic but decent enough if you liked the character. After a few issues Whilce Portacio took over the artwork and while the writing was very solid during that time, it could have very well been absolute shit and it wouldn't have mattered because the artwork was that good. Once he left, it went downhill. For a while there would be a different team on writing and artwork every month. Punisher War Journal had Jim Lee and it was awesome as fuck until Jim Lee left to do X-men or whatever the fuck he did that wasn't Punisher. Fuck him. And I don't remember the name of the initial artist on Punisher War Zone when it first started but he was really good too. But again, it was good for six months to a year before they changed artists and writers and then the whole thing went to shit.

I even read Thor for a while only because I liked Walt Simonson's art. Glen MacCharleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06362518660303256909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-30235379223998181762013-04-27T01:45:21.067-04:002013-04-27T01:45:21.067-04:00I never paid any attention to Doctor Doom until I ...I never paid any attention to Doctor Doom until I read Secret Wars. He didn't seem to give a shit about anything or respect anyone at all.

Secret Wars also made me look at Spiderman differently. I remember he got into a fight with the X-Men on Battleworld and took the whole team on by himself. Other than Wolverine I've never really liked mutants so it was fun to see Spiderman make them look stupid.

Mutants are, for the most part, lame. It's a lazy method of character generation. No magic spider bite, no traumatic childhood experience, they're just born that way. Fuck off.

Rob Liefeld sucks. He din't revamp X-Force either as he was the artist and writer of that series right from issue number one. He revamped The New Mutants, which was then discontinued and then X-Force picked up more or less where it had left off. I never understood why Liefeld was so popular. His artwork was absolute shit. It looked unfinished half the time. I will admit that I liked Cable for a short period and Deadpool was interesting at first but I got sick of both of them fairly quickly. So fuck Rob Liefeld.

Some characters are hit or miss depending entirely on how they're portrayed. I like the Hulk much better as a raging retard than any of his other incarnations. But Joe Fixit was fun too. Peter David's "smart Hulk" was garbage. People keep telling me Planet Hulk and World War Hulk were both really good but I have yet to read them.
Daredevil could be decent with the right team of writer and artist. Pre-frank Miller Daredevil was crap, post-Frank Miller Daredevil could go either way.
Same thing with Batman. Frank Miller's Dark Knight series was probably the best ever depiction of that character in any medium, be it comics, movies or TV. Even now it still shits all over Christopher Nolan's movie trilogy. Year One was good too (but nowhere near as good as Dark Knight) and other than those two series I haven't read any other Batman material from Miller but I've heard the rest of it is crap so I've never bothered to try. Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale were a great Batman team and it's too bad they didn't do more stories together.

Frank Miller is very hit or miss. He's either really good or borderline retarded. Even his Dark Knight series, which I was a huge fan of (and everybody calls it The Dark Knight Returns now even though that was only the tile of the first book in that series and not the title of the entire series) had moments where the artwork was kind of a distraction. He peaked with the first few Sin City stories, but even they started to get stupid after a while. Most of the good ones were already included in the movie. A Dame to Kill For is the only good one left worth making into a movie. Everything else was good but hardly great by any stretch of the imagination.
Glen MacCharleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06362518660303256909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-67831778085297812512013-04-27T01:12:50.060-04:002013-04-27T01:12:50.060-04:00Miracleman was awesome when I read it as a kid. w...Miracleman was awesome when I read it as a kid. written by the same guy who wrote Rorschach in watchmen. Alan Moore, was the writer, I think Michael Golden was the artist? It came out before watchmen I think, from the British side of dc, maybe under eclipse label. but it might have been a "reimagining" of the character, because that's usually what Moore likes to do. that's what watchmen is about, he originally wrote the story about some old charelston comics characters that dc had acquired and were collecting dust, but some higher ups said no way; so he created some pretty cool characters based on the archetypes. funny that some guys bring up valiant characters, I used read those titles too. Bloodshot, Turok, xo manowar, archer and Armstrong, shadowmaster. the list goes on. bloodshot was cool, a ninja terminator is a good description. I think he was related somehow to another valiant character, a ninja with the same pale skin and red dot. anyone remember his name? Wasn't there another ninja named Ninjak? The valiant and image crossover was great for my preadolescent self, Jim lee and Barry Windsor Smith! Doesn't get much better than that. man I enjoyed comics as a kid, and agree with all your picks. my favorite fantastic four comics were the ones with ghost rider, grey hulk, Logan, and Spiderman taking all the action. illustrated by Arthur Adams. classic. good shit Jamie, after all these years, I've finally posted a comment.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-6952186702857728502013-04-27T01:02:16.245-04:002013-04-27T01:02:16.245-04:00fuck yes, berserk is all kinds of awesome. and is ...fuck yes, berserk is all kinds of awesome. and is also something that jamie would probably like a lot.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04227180442337023676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-63472495115162930522013-04-26T20:01:51.591-04:002013-04-26T20:01:51.591-04:00Love the photo of Mendelson playing drumsLove the photo of Mendelson playing drumsPragmatisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14978248488749138867noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-13339063979428541962013-04-26T15:10:30.894-04:002013-04-26T15:10:30.894-04:00http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb2hzz56Nowhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb2hzz56NowAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-81335606154184484282013-04-26T12:39:07.932-04:002013-04-26T12:39:07.932-04:00Not a Deadpool fan Jamie? I only know Valiant for them having terrible artists and having resurrected Magnus, Robot Fighter, the worst comic any has ever read in the history of forever. Most of the time it looks as though no one's explained the concept of crosshatching to the artists at Valiant, and the rest of the time it looks as though they did so and then forced the artists to learn how to do so by letting them copy the covers of X-Factor from the late 80s and early 1990s. Maybe they've learned how to top the artistry I produce on the porcelain when I have the trots, but as of the last time I checked, they had not.Jamie Lewishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16182869171233847161noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-10174298200612715852013-04-26T08:36:14.723-04:002013-04-26T08:36:14.723-04:00Great Post Jamie,
