Powerlifting in the 1970s was an amateur sport- there is no reason why fewer people should total elite by 40 year old standards now than they did then, and that's the case both from a raw numbers and a percentage of total standpoint. That's fucking pthetic. Increased participation should have increased, at the very least, the total number of lifters per weightclass totaling elite.Jamie Lewishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16182869171233847161noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-7730898183741918042014-04-28T18:12:31.845-04:002014-04-28T18:12:31.845-04:00Remi- I have. That's not only not the case now, but the regression is staggering. Your bullshit about steroids is pointless- they are as prevalent now as they were in the past, and might even be moreso. The nonsense comparing LeBron to the average baller also doesn't hold- all of the lifters of the 1970s were amateurs. As for my "copout" it was hardly that- any recommendation I would make would keep 95% of the lifters out of the sport. Rather than getting better, which was the fucking point (you fuckers stuck, stop sucking, start taking pride in what you do and stop treating it like a fucking fun run). From my perspective, most people should just fucking kill themselves anyway- their lives are meaningless. As such, I simplyt chose to shame people into being better, or at least attempting to do so. Instead, as your replies have indicated, all I did was hurt the feelings of people who would rather make excuses than improve.Jamie Lewishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16182869171233847161noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-43913436273831697492014-04-28T01:29:04.681-04:002014-04-28T01:29:04.681-04:00Maybe a bit of a weird question to ask, but do you...Maybe a bit of a weird question to ask, but do you have any clue why. Well, that's the way it was in the 70's with the IPF and then they wanted drug testing and the other feds came out. Lifters on drugs can still lift in the IPF otherwise they would've banned the Russian and Ukrainian federations because the vast majority of their top lifters of the last decade failed at least one drug test. If you want "some sort of an "amateur" federation and system of meets", it's already there. There is a fourth event after the deadlift however: The piss test.Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05554774042398796474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-40176889267871773252014-04-24T11:29:28.829-04:002014-04-24T11:29:28.829-04:00It's apples and oranges. Jamie you are compari...It's apples and oranges. Jamie you are comparing elite lifters taking PED' s with average participants. There were only 34 American entrants in the '72 in the World Championships and only 47 in the '73 world's. Not to mention that aside from Ed Coan' s, the majority of the records have been destroyed by modern day powerlifting. You have to compare the elite lifters of the 70's to the present one's to have a valid argument. Comparing elite athletes to recreational enthusiasts is devoid of all common sense. Did you not expect the sport to grow? There hasn't been a decline in performance. There is simply more participation which means a decline from the supposed standard. How about you compete less and only compete in national/world meets and leave local meets to the average locals. The more powerlifting becomes wide spread and popular means more money and sponsors. The sport will never grow and unify with your mindset.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17755667565813548004noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-12473645117194526992014-04-23T08:02:00.925-04:002014-04-23T08:02:00.925-04:00If you wanted to look at the music hall strongman ...If you wanted to look at the music hall strongman era as a whole, most people who deliberately exercised were doing faggy light calisthenics like you see in Sandow's book or the one on Indian club swinging. I would guess they were mostly middle class though, and most labourers would be much stronger (excepting the fraction who were badly injured). Strongmen represented a negligibly small fraction of the population, hardly anybody did it recreationally any more than people become recreational trapeze artists (or gymnasts) any other circus act.
Over the last century, probably with a lot of exceptions, the number of labourers has fallen considerably; and the middle-class exercising group and the performing strongman group have come closer together: People going to a health club and doing what they read in Men's Health are getting more results than some idiot waving 5lb dumbells around and people who can do what many other people can do still think they have something to show off with their wanky squat PR.

That's what this is really about: People seeking validation from their peers and feeling that they are somehow special because they can enter a powerlifting meet; glossing over the fact that any idiot can enter a meet and post similar numbers with minimal effort.
If there was a culture where every man entered in powerlifting contest at least once a year nobody would complain about how few people totalled elite and there wouldn't be this series of writings or any of the support they have received, it's just pathetic that people are trying to become "tough as a nail" by doing something low-effort and low-risk. It is entirely an ideological thing.
Related, here is an interview about Welsh miners fighting:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/9028282.stmThe Blobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13112612054817642702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835524249360195666.post-30004551358916798102014-04-22T19:46:17.917-04:002014-04-22T19:46:17.917-04:00Nevertheless (in response to Jamie), it feels as t...Nevertheless (in response to Jamie), it feels as though I can almost say with certainty that the old time Strongmen were stronger in ideology as well as physiology than our contemporary athletes, even if we don't have comparable metrics. Perhaps this is from personal bias, but regardless your article does hit the nail on the head in suggesting a certain deficieny in our present culture regardless of ethnicity or nationality. Being tough as nail ought to be regarded as a virtue, not as a character deficiency.
Have you read "Physical Nutrition and Degeneration" by Weston A. Price? That book is phenomenal!
